Gift Guide: Why Custom Sneakers Make the Perfect Personalized Present
Most personal gifts are looked at once and then put away. A hand-painted pair of sneakers is personal and used constantly — which is exactly why it lands so well. The catch is that it needs planning, not last-minute ordering.
Order earlier than you think
Two to four weeks is a normal turnaround, and longer around the holidays. Add curing and shipping time on top.
If the date is tight, ask about a simpler design rather than rushing a detailed one. A clean single-panel piece beats a hurried portrait.
Get the size right without asking
Check a pair they already own — the size is printed inside the tongue or on the insole. Note the model too, since fit varies between silhouettes.
Confirm with the artist whether they can hold a commission until the size is verified, and ask what happens if it needs changing.
- Size from a shoe they already wear
- Note the exact model and colourway
- Ask about exchange options before paying
Brief the artist on the person, not just a picture
The strongest gifted pairs reference something specific: a pet, a city, a band, an inside joke, a date that matters.
Send a few reference images and a sentence about why it matters. Artists design better when they understand the story.
Present it well
Ask for the original box and, if possible, a photo of the work in progress or a note from the artist. It turns the gift into something with provenance.
Include care basics with it — gentle cleaning, no machine washing — so the pair still looks good a year later.
