How to Commission Your First Pair of Custom Sneakers

Commissioning a pair sounds more complicated than it is. There is an artist to choose, a design to describe and a wait to sit through — but the process is the same every time, and knowing the order removes almost all of the risk.

Pick the artist before the design

Choose someone whose finished work already looks like what you want. Asking a graffiti artist for a soft portrait usually disappoints both of you.

Look for several pairs in the same style, close-up photos, and pairs that have been worn — that last one tells you the sealing holds up.

Describe the idea, then let them design it

Bring references: colours, images, a mood, the thing the pair is about. You do not need to design it yourself; that is what you are paying for.

Say clearly what must be in it and what you would rather avoid. Constraints help; art-directing every stroke does not.

  • The shoe model and your size
  • Three to five reference images
  • Must-haves and definite no-gos
  • Any date you need it by

Agree money and timing in writing

Expect a deposit, a quoted turnaround and one round of sketch revisions. Confirm what happens if you change your mind after painting starts.

Most detailed pairs take two to four weeks, longer in gifting season. Order well ahead of a birthday rather than hoping.

Check the pair on arrival — and wear it

Look for even coverage at flex points, clean edges along the sole, and a fully cured finish that is not tacky to touch.

Then wear them. A sealed pair is built to be used; store them out of direct sunlight and clean gently rather than keeping them in a box.
